Christmas celebrations in Belgium

The festival of Christmas is celebrated with much enthusiasm and zeal across the world. Different parts of the world have different ways of celebrating the festival of joy and merry making and each type is unique to the country or place in which it is being celebrated. Belgium has its own unique style of celebrating the festival of joy and merry making, that is, Christmas. In Belgium, there are generally two Santa Claus father figures, that is, St. Nicholas and Pere Noel. As the tradition goes, Pere Noel comes to those people of Belgium who speak French and St. Nicholas, probably the a little better known in the international arena as compared to his counterpart, that is, Pere Noel, visits those people who speak the Walloon language which is actually a dialect of French which is spoken in Belgium.

Pere Noel is believed to shower those kids who have been in the best of their manners and behaviour with loads of chocolates and Christmas goodies. However for the naughty kind of kids, Pere has wooden sticks on offer as Christmas gifts! So the Belgian parents insist that their children remain in the best of their behaviour in order to receive loads of Christmas goodies from Pere Noel instead of receiving wooden sticks from Father Santa! The Christmas Eve is called le reveillion de Noel in Belgium.

On the eve of Christmas a festival buffet is prepared and served in Belgian homes. The buffet starts off with a drink (aperitif) and consists of snacks followed by a course comprising of sea food followed stuffed turkey. The dessert is a rich creamy cake called la buche de Noel in Belgium. Another traditional Christmas delicacy in Belgium is sweet bread which is called cougnou or cougnolle and is shaped like an infant Jesus.
