Christmas celebrations in Cuba

Christmas celebrations have returned to Cuba, the Caribbean island which is situated in between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The Christmas customs that are followed in Cuba are in many ways similar to the Christmas customs that are practiced and followed in Spain. The only difference in the Christmas celebrations in Cuba as compared to Spain would be the North American influences which can be found in traces in the Christmas celebrations in Cuba. The most festive time during the Christmas holidays in Cuba was the noche Buena (literally translated as “good night”) or the Christmas Eve. The Christmas Eve consisted of a sumptuous meal comprising of traditionally prepared roast pork, black beans which is served over rice, fried mashed plantains and yuca (which is a native tuber better known amongst the people of North America as tapioca and otherwise known as cassava or mandioc in other regions of the world).

Family members of a large Cuban family would roast a pig by digging a pit in the ground and then roasting the pig over coals and covered with banana leaves. In the cities of Cuba, oven roasted fresh ham was more popular as compared to the roasted pig. Members of the Cuban family would dance to Cuban music in order to celebrate the festive spirit of the festival of joy and merry making, that is, Christmas. This dancing to the tunes of Cuban music is followed by everyone attending to the midnight mass together. The idea of a Christmas tree was introduced in Cuba by America in the year of 1940.
