Christmas Celebration in Hungary

Christmas Celebration in Hungary begins on Christmas Eve. Hungarians have given a very special name to the evening before Christmas Day. The Christmas Eve evening is indeed a holy evening as far as Christmas Celebration in Hungary is concerned and it is called Szent-este . Christmas celebration in Hungary involves lots of religious rituals. The Hungarians enjoy the Christmas eve evening with their families as they go round the Christmas tree singing the Christmas carols before they open their gifts. Hungarians believe that the gifts under the Christmas tree are kept by the angels and baby Jesus. Then, they go to churches to attend the Midnight Mass.

Christmas celebration in Hungary is incomplete without the popular nativity plays. The plays are either performed by children or adults and in most of the cases performances are accompanied by puppet shows and musical instruments, Christmas songs, and even dance performances.

It is interesting to take an account of the meeting of children with Mikulas or St Nicholas before Christmas. This meeting usually takes place on December 6th, two weeks before the actual Christmas. St Nicholas meets the children in the guise of a bishop and he dresses in robes, carries a staff in one hand and a bag full of gifts for the children in another. One can easily identify him from the red mitter on his head. The bishop is accompanied by the “Devil”. The Devil is actually a small boy who dress up in black costume and appears to be quite frightening with his horns and long tail. His job is to smack the naughty children with switch made out of dry twigs. And good children are rewarded with toys, sweets and other gift items.
