Christmas Stocking Traditions

Mention of Christmas stocking traditions date back to the 18th century in North America and many parts of Europe. The tradition of Christmas stockings are an integral part of Christmas traditions in today's day. The Christmas stocking tradition is a favorite among children all over the world and they look forward to this more than anything else in Christmas.

What makes the Christmas stocking tradition so special is the element of surprise it holds. This mystery enthralls the children and makes them look forward to Christmas with a lot of enthusiasm and gusto. Excited children go to sleep on Christmas Eve after hanging their empty Christmas stockings on the fireplace, mantle place or any other place hoping to find it full in the morning. They believe that Santa Clause rides across the skies in his reindeer drawn sleigh and lands on the roofs of their houses. He then climbs down the fireplace and enters their home deep into the night and fills their stockings with Christmas goodies. Edible items like chocolates, nuts, sweets, berries, jellies, candies etc make up the Christmas goodies.

This is why children are made to believe if they are good Santa will pay them a visit and give them Christmas presents and the children who have been bad all year get nothing at all. Children all over the world strongly believe in this Christmas stocking tradition and it gives them great joy.

There are variations to the Christmas stocking tradition throughout the world some use shoes instead of stockings. In Holland children put carrots and hay in their shoes for the horse of Sintirklass, Hungarian children shine their shoes before putting them out to be filled. In Italy children leave their shoes for the good witch La Befana to be filled with Christmas gifts.
