Christmas Tree Tradition

It is really fascinating to trace the history of Christmas tree tradition. Christmas tree is a special name given to the fir and coniferous trees. This is because, these trees were associated with Christianity in Germany about thousand years ago. St. Boniface once cut down an oak tree while he was trying to convert pagans to Christians. Oak tree was worshiped by the pagans but surprisingly a fir tree grew in the place of that oak tree. Since then, fir tree signifies Christianity. It was in 16th century when fir trees were brought indoors as Christmas tree. Another probable reason for calling fir tree “Christmas Tree” is that it is an evergreen tree which can be easily accepted as a symbol of life, hope and everlasting spring.

Christmas tree tradition thus began in the 16th century. According to the Christmas tree tradition, the first tree was decorated in 1605. Previously, trees were decorated with simple items like apples, wafers, sugar, colored papers and food items like cookies and candies.
It is interesting to note that in Christmas tree tradition a decorated Christmas tree is taken as “a newly born Christ”. The star on the Christmas tree reminds us of the Star that led the Three Wise Men to the stable where Jesus was born. The angels that are put at the top of Christmas trees are believed to be those who heralded Jesus's birth.

Now , Christmas trees are decorated with various types of lights and designers' products. The simplicity is missing but the Christmas trees still carry the same Christmas connotations irrespective of their decorative modes.
