Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus. The celebration of Christmas marks the reinforcement of peace, harmony and compassion- something which Christ preached all throughout his life. So Merry Christmas is marked by enacting scenes from Nativity, singing of Christmas carols on the Christmas eve, exchanging Christmas wishes and gifts.

The story behind the celebration of merry Christmas is the birth of Lord Jesus to virgin Mary in a manger in Bethlehem. In accordance to the Julian calender, Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. But as per the Georgian calender, the Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on 7th January and the Armenian Apostolic Church on January 6.

Many ancient winter festivals are associated with the celebrations and festivities of merry Christmas. Some of the festival associated with Christmas merriment are as follows:

  • Saturnalia is a winter festival in Italy. It is celebrated during the Christmas week.

  • On the 25th of December the Romans celebrate Dies Natalis Solis Invicti(birthday of the sun god)
