Then in north America he became loving, merry, old, overweight superhero of children – dear Santa Claus. Children are writing letters to him with deep hope that he will fulfill their wish.

This ritual has a story behind it. Once St. Nick threw bags of gold coins to the three poor sisters who were under the threat of being forced into prostitution because their father was so poor that he could not give dowries for their marriage. When St. Nick was throwing the bag of gold then the last bag for the youngest sister landed in the in the stockings which was set by there for drying.

The concept of stockings and chimney came from the story. And the interesting thing is children from different countries are different ritual regarding the letter to Santa Claus. In US and Canada, children leave a glass of milk and cookies with the letter, and in Australia Sherry and mince pies are given with the letter to Santa Claus.
