Origin of Santa Claus



Santa Claus is a mythical character which actually a combination of different facts. The origin of Santa Claus evolved during the ages along with the facts like,-the story of three magi who gave gifts to baby Jesus on the day he was born, the myth of St. Nicholas, Dutch immigrants went to America and their Sinter Klass became Santa Claus in America, then contribution of the people like Washington Irving, Clement Moore, Thomas Nast and atlast the Coca Cola Ad who gave Santa today's visual form. The Origin of Santa is not story one day or few years had been developing during the centuries.

The origin of Santa Claus started off mainly in the history of Bishop Nicholas (350 AD), who is said to be lived in a village Patara of Myra, which is now in Turkey. He was very rich, generous, and loving toward children.


One of the most popular story of St. Nicholas is that he helped three poor sisters with dowries so that they can be married and saved them to be sold to a slavery by their father. The Orthodox Church later raised St. Nicholas, miracle worker, to a position of great esteem

The Dutch immigrants in America propagated their one of their favorite custom Sinter Klass their. It got popularity by the patriot and antiquarian, John Pintard. He founded the New York Historical Society in 1804, promoted St. Nicholas as patron saint. In January 1809, Washington Irving (1789-1853) joined the society and his work 'Knickerbocker History' gave reference to the legend of Saint Nicholas Day as then it was then observed by the Dutch.

On the first anniversary of the Society in St. Nicholas Day which is on December 6, 1810,

John Pintard commissioned artist Alexander Anderson first gave an American image of Nicholas for the occasion. Nicholas was shown in a gift-giving role with children's treats in stockings hanging at a fireplace.

In 1823, the merry elf image encountered a big boost, from the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," popularly known as "The Night Before Christmas."by Clement Clark Moore, a professor of biblical languages at New York's Episcopal General Theological Seminary.

The main origin of Santa Claus of this present image was propagated in 1863, by political cartoonist Thomas Nast began. He drew a series of annual black-and-white drawings in Harper's Weekly, inspird by the poem and Washington Irving's historical work. In the drawings Santa had flowing beard, fur garments, and an omnipresent clay pipe. Nast's Santa changed the whole appearance of Santa Claus. After that American got their Santa Claus which is derived from the German Sankt Niklaus and Dutch Sinter klaas.

Though the origin of Santa Claus started from Europe but in America Santa got the visual form. After Nast the appearance of Santa evolved by artists in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and colors. By the end of the 1920s, the American Santa Claus emerged in a life-sized in a red, white fur-trimmed suit in the illustration of N. C. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell and other popular artists. In 1931 Haddon Sundblom Used the image of Santa Claus in Coca-Cola Santa advertisements. The ads popularized and established American Santa as an icon of commercial culture and a symbol of Festivals.
